Watch: Romano answers key queries over De Jong to Man Utd or Chelsea

Frenkie de Jong’s long-mooted move away from Barcelona is becoming the transfer saga of the summer. Will he go to Manchester United or Chelsea? Might he still stay in Catalonia? Fabrizio Romano has answered some big questions surrounding the supposed deals.

De Jong signed for Barcelona in the summer of 2019 following a series of standout performances at Ajax under the current Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag and has since gone on to play 140 games in Blaugrana.

Now, though, there is the distinct possibility that De Jong will be moving on from Camp Nou with his most likely destination being the Premier League.

Though Barcelona president Joan Laporta has publicly said that De Jong is not for sale, Manchester United have reportedly been in talks with Barca over the player for some time, though negotiations have apparently been held up by the £17million Barcelona owe De Jong in deferred wages.

Might another club come in and nick De Jong from under Manchester United’s noses then?

According to the Mail, new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly jetted into the Catalan capital on Thursday to discuss a number of potential transfers, including De Jong.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has brought us an update on the whole situation.

“Guys, the negotiation between Man United and Barcelona has not collapsed, the negotiation is still there,” Romano said.

“Chelsea have an interest Frenkie. Since long time, not today, not yesterday. Long time, they have an interest in Frenkie de Jong.

“But they also know that Manchester United are already negotiating Barcelona for Frenkie. Chelsea, as of today, have not submit[ted] a proposal for Frenkie de Jong.

“And from what I’m told at the moment there is no negotiation on the price or on the details. There is an interest, but Man United are already negotiating with Barcelona.”

So, Romano concluded, the decision is now in De Jong’s hands.

“Frenkie wants to stay at Barca, loves Barca,” Romano added. But, with the Catalan club keen to trim their wage bill, that may not be possible.
