Watch: Journalist eviscerates Glazers Man Utd ownership – ‘lost their soul’
Sky Sports News journalist Kaveh Solhekol gave an in-depth critique of the Glazers’ ownership of Manchester United that’s gone viral on social media for echoing the feelings of many of the club’s supporters.
Solhekol is best-known for giving the latest transfer gossip and scoops, but he changed tack somewhat as he identified what the major, overarching reason for United’s underachievement in recent seasons has been.
Regular watchers of Sky Sports will recognise the arguments put forward by the journalist, with former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville having made the same points on several occasions following their poor results and performances in recent seasons.
Fans of rival clubs often point to the club’s extraordinarily high transfer spend in recent years, but Solhekol offered a rebuttal, stating that overpaying in terms of wages is part of the problem and pointing out that the club’s fanbase have been consistent in their opposition to the Glazers through good times and bad.
“Speaking to Manchester United supporters, they will say United are a club who have lost their soul. Manchester United have been through dark times before, they’ve been through years and years of not winning the title,” began Solhekol.
“I remember United in the 1980s losing 5-0 at Everton, losing 5-1 against Manchester City. You look at players who they had in the 80s – Bryan Robson, Mark Hughes, Gordon Strachan, Remi Moses, Gordon McQueen. They still had players who knew what it meant to play for Manchester United and had a connection with the fans. That doesn’t exist at Old Trafford anymore.
“When you talk about the ownership situation at Manchester United. Some people, especially those who support other clubs, say United fans are just complaining because they’re not winning at the moment and if they were winning, they wouldn’t be complaining.
“Well, we’ve got to remember United fans were demonstrating before the Glazers took over. Some of the fans were so upset that they went off and set up their own club – FC United of Manchester.
“David Beckham wore the green and gold scarf on the pitch after Manchester United had beaten AC Milan in the Champions League 4-0. Manchester United fans were complaining from the start and during the good times as well, so I don’t accept this argument that they’re only complaining because they’re not winning.”
