Watch: Liverpool’s Joel Matip scores sensational solo goal in training

Joel Matip is a beloved member of the Liverpool squad and the defender demonstrated exactly why he’s so revered with a wonderful solo goal during pre-season training.

Matip has played 166 games for Liverpool since he joined on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016. He has scored nine goals, and has helped the Reds to both Premier League and Champions League success.

While his performances may have been overshadowed by Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, Matip barely put a foot wrong last year. He played 43 times, his most in a season for Liverpool, and was unlucky to miss out on a starting spot for the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

And, during the third day of Liverpool’s pre-season training, the Cameroon international wowed his team-mates and manager Jurgen Klopp with an outstanding goal.

Firstly, Matip nicked the ball away from Roberto Firmino on the opposing team.

To wonderous sounds from the coaching staff, the 30-year-old then slipped past a three-way challenge from Tyler Morton, new signing Fabio Carvalho and Firmino.

Advancing towards goal, Matip dummied away from Joe Gomez before an outside-of-the-boot finish that left goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga with no chance.

“Mamma Mia!” shouted assistant manager Pep Lijnders, while Klopp couldn’t hide his smile either. “You can see the joy in his face,” joked the Liverpool boss. “He’s really happy, I can tell you.”

Matip came close to scoring on numerous occasions last season when on a mazy run and finally scored in such fashion during the 6-0 hammering of Leeds United at Anfield in February.

And, with Liverpool in four competitions again next season, expect the defender to receive plenty of opportunities to replicate his wonderful solo effort that sparked joy among his team-mates.
