Watch: Henderson snubbing Mbappe handshake is hilariously awkward
Kylian Mbappe may arguably be the best footballer in the world but he couldn’t get Jordan Henderson to shake his hand before France’s World Cup win over England – and we can’t stop laughing at the sheer awkwardness of the scene.
After scoring five goals for France in the tournament, Mbappe was very much pinpointed as the dangerman for the holders and he dominated much of the pre-match conversation.
And it appeared as if Henderson was completely focused on the task at hand before kick-off and did not notice the presence of the PSG forward.
As the teams were lining up in the tunnel before the match, Mbappe extended the offer of his handshake for a fair amount of time before eventually taking his hand away and laughing awkwardly.
As the match unfolded, it would be Mbappe and France who had the last laugh; the holders beat England 2-1 to progress to a semi-final clash with Morocco on Wednesday.
But, despite this, Henderson has enjoyed an impressive tournament and former team-mate Steven Gerrard praised his impact in Qatar.
“Obviously being an England fan I’m following England and Jordan from a personal point of view. I think he’s been immaculate, both on and off the pitch,” Gerrard told Liverpool’s website after last week’s victory over Senegal.
“His last performance he was obviously Man of the Match, very well deserved, and he shut a few critics up that for some reason seem to point fingers at Jordan.
“Being a midfielder, being around Jordan on the daily basis, to see the sacrifices, his dedication and what he puts into his own preparation, the hard work that he puts in, I’m not surprised that he’s putting in this level of performance and I’m delighted for him.”
