Watch: Legends praising Anfield will give Liverpool fans goosebumps
Anfield is well-renowned for its atmosphere and footage of legends from across the football world praising the matchday experience there will give Liverpool fans a shiver down their spine.
Before Sunday’s victory over Manchester City, a victory that could kickstart Liverpool’s season, opposing manager Pep Guardiola spoke about the difficulties of playing at Anfield for the away side.
“The game will be dictated by what happens on the pitch,” Guardiola said. “It is always difficult to play Liverpool. The team make it a tough place to go and the crowd have an impact.
“It’s one of the biggest atmospheres and it’s a joy to be there and be part of these types of games.”
Liverpool have not lost a league game in front of an Anfield crowd for five and a half years and some of the greatest managers in Premier League history have struggled to contain the excitable Kopites.
“[Anfield is] the best stadium in England, it’s simple because people are so close to the pitch,” Arsene Wenger said in 2020. “People really love football in every family, they are football connoisseurs.”
While Jose Mourinho, during his time at Manchester United in 2017, said: “You know this is quite funny for me because I think when people speak about big atmospheres, it looks like we don’t like [this].
“It looks like it’s a problem for us to go to a certain place and to face a big atmosphere – [but] this is what we want.
I am even more surprised when I hear former, big players speak about atmospheres like something sinister, something that worries. It motivates us, it is something that we want, it is something that if we could have every match we would have every match.”
And Sir Alex Ferguson, the most successful British manager of all time who managed arch-rivals United, picked Anfield as the best atmosphere in English football when asked by Gary Neville.
“Anfield,” he said without hesitation. “Anfield. Electric. You’ve [Neville] been there, you know what it’s like. It’s a marvellous atmosphere. You have to expect that atmosphere even if you’re losing.”
“You never felt safe there, did you? I mean literally,” added Neville, to which Ferguson agreed.
