Jurgen Klopp looks on during the Premier League match between Liverpool and Bournemouth at Anfield, Liverpool, August 2022.

Watch: Jurgen Klopp delivers verdict on Liverpool’s midfielder chase

It’s common knowledge that Liverpool are in the market for a midfielder but Jurgen Klopp believes that it’s unlikely they’ll sign anybody on transfer deadline day.

Despite winning their last two Premier League matches, the Reds have made a stuttering start to the new season and many of the club’s supporters believe their problems lie in the middle of the park.

A midfield trio of Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Harvey Elliott started the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on August 22 and struggled to control the game. It was a performance that led many people to suggest Liverpool would need to sign a new central midfielder before the window closes.

The club haven’t signed a midfielder since Georginio Wijnaldum left for PSG last summer and Jurgen Klopp has previously hinted that he would like reinforcements.

“A little difficult [to answer], I’m not really the right person to ask,” Klopp told Sky Germany following the result at Old Trafford.

“As a manager, I’d like to have more players who are available, naturally. But that’s all I can say. We’re always working on it. But whether we can do something, I don’t know.”

But, when Klopp spoke to the media after Wednesday’s victory over Newcastle, he didn’t sound confident that any deal could be struck before the window closes.

“I don’t think so,” the Liverpool boss said when asked about the possibility of a new midfielder arriving at Anfield today. “As long as there’s time, we shouldn’t close the door completely.

“Obviously Hendo [Jordan Henderson] was injured, he got a hamstring [injury] which is absolutely not helpful. But I don’t think so.”

Liverpool had been linked with a host of midfielders in recent weeks, including the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Jude Bellingham and Douglas Luiz.

But, after Klopp’s comments, it would be a surprise to see anybody arrive at Liverpool on deadline day.
