Watch: Man Utd’s Antony even spins when celebrating Brazil call-up

Manchester United’s Antony broke down in tears after being named in the Brazil squad for the World Cup.

Antony has been a regular for the Selecao in recent months and was always expected to make the 26-man squad for Qatar 2022 later this month, but confirmation clearly meant the world to him.

Having moved from Ajax to Manchester United for an £86million fee in the summer, representing his country at the World Cup will be the next major milestone in the 22-year-old’s remarkable rise.

The superstar winger grew up in a favela known as Inferininho (little hell), one of the most dangerous and deprived areas on the outskirts of Sao Paulo.

“Real pressure was when I lived in a favela and left for school at nine in the morning not sure whether I would be able to eat again until nine in the night. That’s some pressure. Otherwise, we can all adapt,” Antony said (via BBC).

He’s scored three goals for the Red Devils since signing on deadline day, but has also missed the last three matches due to injury. However, it’s thought only to be a minor knock and not something that will affect his participation on the international stage.

Antony has two goals in 11 international appearances for Brazil and has been selected in a squad that’s stacked with exciting forwards, from PSG icon Neymar to Barcelona’s Raphinha, Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, Real Madrid duo Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior and Tottenham’s Richarlison.

Meanwhile, Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus and Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino have missed out. Antony’s Red Devils team-mates Casemiro and Fred have also made the cut in midfield, while Alex Telles – currently on loan at Sevilla – has also been selected by Tite.

It’s not quite his trademark skill with the ball at his feet, but it’s heartening to see that Antony still spins around while celebrating one of the most meaningful moments of his career to date.

Embraced by his family, who are all wearing United shirts with ‘Antony 21’ on the back, they react to Tite’s announcement by jumping into the air, hugging and – fittingly – spinning around.
