Fabrizio Romano has given Manchester United fans an update on their transfer activity this summer, including their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong and Jurrien Timber.

Romano, in an exclusive interview with Give Me Sport, claimed that United have alternatives in place if a deal for De Jong fails to go through including Wolves and Portugal midfielder Ruben Neves.

“I’m sure they have some alternatives,” Romano said. “Ruben Neves is a player, that last summer, was already on the list. He’s always been on the list of Manchester United, and is really appreciated.”

While a deal for De Jong is considered a priority by Erik ten Hag, the new manager has identified Timber and Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres as their main defensive targets.

“At the moment they’re the two top targets, they have always been the two top targets at centre-back,” he said. “But, I won’t be surprised if Man Utd will try something different in the coming days.”

The transfer guru that Timber wouldn’t look to force the issue in terms of leaving Ajax, saying: “From what I’m told, Timber will be really respectful of Ajax as the first point.

“He doesn’t want to break his relationship with Ajax so he’s leaving the situation with the clubs. He’s not desperate to leave the club or to join Man Utd as soon as possible.

“He’s not forcing this move.”

There have also been rumours that United will move for midfielder Christian Eriksen, who is currently a free agent after his Brentford contract expired.

Romano said: “With Christian Eriksen, they had a conversation, a direct discussion with his agent Martin Schoots a few days ago, they discussed about a potential contract, so it’s a possibility, but Tottenham and Brentford are also pushing for him to go next season.”
