Watch: Man Utd’s Scott McTominay avoids red for shocking challenge

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay avoided a red card despite making a high challenge during Manchester United’s 2-1 Premier League loss to Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

McTominay started the opening game of Manchester United’s Premier League campaign in midfield alongside Fred, but the pair had their work cut out as Brighton’s players swarmed the central area, not allowing the United players to breathe.

It didn’t take long for McTominay’s frustration to show.

After taking a poor touch 25 minutes into the game, the ball ran away from the Scotland international and he lunged into a tackle with Brighton’s Moises Caicedo in an attempt to win it back.

Caicedo arrived at the ball first, however, and, as he did, McTominay came in full-blooded, going over the ball and catching Caicedo on the shin with his studs.

The Ecuador international was not seriously hurt and continued playing, but red cards have certainly been given for similar challenges in the Premier League.

The scores were still 0-0 at that point, but Brighton took the lead five minutes later, Danny Welbeck assisting Pascal Gross. Gross then made it 2-0 before the break.

United pulled one back in the second period through an Alexis Mac Allister own goal. But it was too little too late.

After the game, Roy Keane once again expressed his displeasure with United’s midfield pairing.

“The decision-making and football intelligence from midfield – and we’ve been on it for a long time – Fred and McTominay, not good enough.

“They won’t get Man United back up near the top. We see it week in, week out. They’re not up to it.”

According to reports, United have been desperately trying to sign Frenkie de Jong to reinforce their midfield but have had no luck convincing the Barcelona man to leave Catalonia for the North West of England.
