Manchester United loanee James Garner assisted from a corner during Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 win over Birmingham City.

Garner’s 79th minute lofted corner was headed in by Scott McKenna for Forest’s second, confirming the victory after Keinan Davis’ early goal.

Forest are now on 67 points in third place, six off of Bournemouth in second who possess the last automatic promotion spot. They will play the Cherries in the penultimate game of the season in a potential promotion-deciding match.

Garner has had a terrific season with Nottingham Forest and his performances have seen United fans call for him to be incorporated into the first-team squad next season.

Even Bruno Fernandes has been impressed; United’s Portuguese midfielder recently revealed in a Q&A that Garner was the young player he was most looking forward to playing with in the future.

United interim manager Ralf Ragnick, who will reportedly play a key role behind the scenes from next season, has also spoken about the on-loan midfielder.

“To be honest I haven’t seen that many games of Nottingham Forest but I will probably do that in the next couple of weeks with my staff and the analysis team,” he told the official club website.

“I’ve heard he’s scored four goals and had four assists there, but my focus, as you can imagine has been on the current team in the last weeks and months.

“This is certainly good if players get game time somewhere and do well, and this is the idea behind a loan period.”

Garner’s assist against Birmingham brings him to five in the Championship this season, seven overall with his two in the FA Cup. He has also scored four goals, including a brilliant strike against Coventry earlier in the week.
