Watch: Peter Drury’s commentary for Messi’s goal will give you tingles
Lionel Messi was at his imperious best as Argentina beat Australia in their last 16 match at the 2022 World Cup and Peter Drury was on hand to narrate another genius performance from the 35-year-old.
Messi made his 1000th appearance in professional football at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium and he marked the special occasion with a masterclass.
The PSG forward was influential as Argentina won 2-1 on Saturday night and progressed to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, where they will face the Netherlands on Friday.
He opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a moment of magic, showing great technique and composure to roll the ball past Mat Ryan in the Australian goal and into the net.
And Drury provided a brilliant piece of commentary to compliment Messi’s latest moment of impish genius.
Drury is one of the world’s best English speaking commentators and he provided another masterclass for Messi’s goal.
“Mac Allister… MESSI!,” Drury said. “He’s only gone and done it again! 1000 games and still he excels.
“They’ll never be another one like him, enjoy him while he’s here… for sure they [Argentina fans] do!”
Messi spoke to the media after the game and he was relieved Argentina were able to narrowly progress.
“It was a tough game, a tough day,” he said. “We had very little time to rest. We were tired. It was a very physical game.
“We’re happy with this victory and another step forwards. We’re through, that’s the important thing.”
Turning to the support of the Argentina fans, he added: “These are incredible moments. We want to thank all the people who are here. The whole of Argentina would love to be here.
“This unity that we have enjoyed for a while is very beautiful. It’s incredible how the fans are living each game and transmitting so much passion and energy. I thank them because it’s incredible.”
“A thousand games and still, he excels. There’ll never be another like him… so enjoy him whilst he’s STILL here”…
