Watch: Rio Ferdinand names his top five centre-backs of the PL era
Rio Ferdinand has named former Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool men as his top five centre-backs in Premier League history.
Were it not for his own modesty, Ferdinand himself would surely be among the top five as a serial title winner with Manchester United, who made the former England international the most expensive defender in the world when they signed him from Leeds United in 2002.
But speaking on The Beautiful Game Podcast, Ferdinand left himself out of the running, with all but one of the players having now retired or left the Premier League.
Three of the players he counted as team-mates either at club level or internationally, while the other two are associated with two of Manchester United’s fiercest rivals.
