Watch: Roy Keane’s first date with his wife was absolutely hilarious
Roy Keane is known for his storytelling that leaves viewers in stiches and he was at it again when recounting the first date he had with his wife.
Former Manchester United captain Keane, who played for the club between 1993 and 2005, was a guest on the latest season of RTE’s Tommy Tiernan Show.
He opened up on a range of subjects, including the infamous Alf-Inge Haaland tackle and the early days of his relationship with his now-wife, Theresa.
In fact, the former Republic of Ireland international soon elaborated on the latter by going into detail about their first date, which was an evening that ended in disaster.
Keane, who had met his now-wife at a club in Nottingham, later went on a date with Theresa. But it didn’t exactly go to plan; she refused to go to the cinema or for a drink with him after the incident.
“It went very badly,” admitted Keane, who initially said the early days of his current relationship were just ‘okay’.
“We met, I picked her up, and I’d met her [before] when I had a few drinks so the chat was slightly different.
“We went for a spin and I said, ‘Do you fancy going to the pictures?’ Because at least at the pictures you can just watch the movie, you don’t have to chat too much.
“And she said ‘No, I went last night with my friends’. So I said, ‘Do you want to go for a drink?’ She said ‘No’. I literally drove back to the car, this is all within 10 or 15 minutes. She said, ‘What are you doing?’
“I said, ‘Well, you don’t want to go for a drink, you don’t want to go to the pictures, what else can we do?’
“She got out [of the car] and I said, ‘Might see you next week’ and she said ‘I don’t think so’ and slammed the door. That was my first date.”
He ended the story, saying: “And we’re still married.” Classic Roy.
