Watch: Thiago scores outrageous backheel volley in Liverpool training
Liverpool’s Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara scored a brilliantly audacious backheel volley goal during a training session at the Reds’ AXA Training Centre on Monday.
The Reds were preparing ahead of their crucial mid-week Premier League clash against Arsenal. Thiago both started and finished the move.
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich man received the ball from the goalkeeper and produced a beautifully lofted pass with his first touch.
It went up the other end of the training pitch to Andy Robertson, who laid it off for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The former Arsenal player then sent a cross into Thiago, who had run up to the other end of the pitch.
Thiago met the ball in the air with his right foot, wrapping it behind his left to score with an audacious finish.
The 30-year-old is in his second season at Anfield after joining from Bayern Munich. He has struggled with injury in Merseyside but has been impressive in the midfield when fit.
His fitness may play some role in determining Liverpool’s success this season, with squad depth very much needed as they compete for all four major trophies.
The Reds have already lifted one trophy this season, winning the Carabao Cup on penalties against Chelsea, and are still in contention in the FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League.
Thiago was listed in the starting XI for the Carabao Cup final but was injured in the warm-up.
“We all agree, and Thiago agrees, there were moments when he struggled injury-wise,” Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said in a press conference earlier this year.
“He is a very, very good player, we were never in doubt about that. His skillset is insane but it is all about staying fit and that’s what we are working on together.”
Prior to Bayern Munich, Thiago played at Barcelona where he came through their La Masia academy.
Thiago has two goals and one assist this season in 22 matches so far.
