Throwback: Diego Maradona & Lionel Messi team up to play football tennis

Since making his senior debut in 2004, Lionel Messi has always been regarded as the heir to Diego Maradona’s throne.

Maradona famously played a starring role in Argentina’s second World Cup triumph in 1986 and also had great success at club level with Boca Juniors, Barcelona and Napoli.

While Messi is yet to win a major honour at international level, he’s scored over 600 goals for Barcelona and also has six Ballon d’Ors to his name.

They are from different generations but the pair did play together against Carlos Tevez during a football tennis tournament in 2006.

Despite being in his late 40s, Maradona was still able to showcase his iconic skills and they formed a brilliant team.

“A very sad day for all Argentines and for football,” Messi said following news of Maradona’s death. “He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal.

“I keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP.”
