Watch: Chelsea flop Timo Werner scores 35mins into Leipzig return
Timo Werner gained an unfortunate reputation for his lack of goalscoring prowess at Chelsea but it took him just 35 minutes to find the net on his second debut for RB Leipzig on Saturday.
Werner made a permanent return to the Bundesliga club earlier this week, completing a reported €30million switch from Chelsea.
The Germany international netted 90 times in 157 appearances at Leipzig before his departure in 2020 but quickly saw his goal tally plummet in England, recording just 23 goals in 89 games during his two-year spell with Chelsea.
‘I’m really pleased to be back in Leipzig,” he told the German club. “The last 24 hours have been really exciting and it’s been a lot of fun to see so many familiar faces again. I had a good time in England. I learnt a lot and got to know a new league.
“At the same time, Leipzig developed a lot too. They’ve won a title and have the same high ambitions as Chelsea.”
And there was one team-mate Werner was especially excited to be reunited with in Germany.
“Christopher Nkunku and I worked well together in the past,” Werner said. “I always followed Leipzig and I know that there’s a lot of quality here. I want to play my part in that.
“I will do my best to get back into the knack of scoring as many goals as possible. Individual awards take second priority for me. There are a lot of good attackers in the league and more goals are being scored in general.”
Leipzig head coach Domenico Tedesco threw him in from the start of their clash with FC Koln on Saturday, and within 35 minutes, he reminded everybody of his talents.
The 26-year-old picked the ball up around 25 yards out from goal and unleashed a drive which squirmed under the body of goalkeeper Marvin Schwabe, who arguably should have saved the shot easily.
It was Werner’s first shot on his second debut for Leipzig, as he got off to the perfect start as he looks to rebuild his reputation.
