Watch: Arsenal fans pelt Rodri with missiles after wild goal celebration
Rodri’s late winner meant joy for Manchester City and deep despair for Arsenal as the two faced off in the Premier League on Saturday – and the Gunners fans at the Emirates did not like the City midfielder’s celebration one bit.
Against the reigning champions and current league leaders, Arsenal played well in first half, opening the scoring through Bukayo Saka with a little over half an hour gone.
But Pep Guardiola’s team drew level from the penalty spot just before the hour mark after the referee had given what looked a soft penalty on Bernardo Silva and Arsenal’s outing became even more difficult when Gabriel Magalhaes was sent off for a second booking two minutes later.
City pushed for a winner and, eventually, they found one, Rodri poking home from close range in second-half injury time.
It was a bitter blow for Arsenal, who perhaps deserved something from the game. But for City it was pure delight and Rodri charged off in a wild celebration, ripping his shirt from his back and running towards the stands.
The Arsenal fans he approached were not at all happy with him and began to pelt him with an array of missiles. It was an unfortunate scene to witness at the end of what was an excellent game.
After the match, Guardiola told BT Sport: “Arsenal were better. They have six days after beating Norwich, we have two days. It was so tough for us to come back.
“We had no energy. That is why we put one more player in the middle, to get more control and passes.
“We know in transitions and the physicality they have it can be difficult. And it was difficult.”
