Watch: Farewell? Edinson Cavani pointedly waves to Man Utd fans

Edinson Cavani put in another typically hard-working performance during Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Burnley but his behaviour after the game has left United fans concerned that he’ll be leaving the club in January.

United ended 2021 with a deserved victory at Old Trafford after strikes from Scott McTominay, Cristiano Ronaldo and an own goal from Ben Mee gave Ralf Rangnick’s side three points.

Cavani, who scored the equaliser against Newcastle on Monday, was rewarded for his cameo at St James’ Park with a start on Thursday and his display embodied the work rate and commitment that United fans have demanded from their players all season.

But the Uruguay international, who turns 35 in February, has been linked with a move away from Manchester in recent weeks.

Barcelona are said to be interested in signing the South American who, according to reports, would be willing to take a pay cut in order to join the Catalan club.

So, when Cavani waved and blew kisses to the United fans after the game, his actions have been interpreted as a farewell to the club he signed for at the beginning of the 2020-21 season.

United would, ideally, keep the veteran until the end of the campaign when his contract is due to expire.

But the decision may be taken out of their hands and the club’s supporters will certainly be sad to see Cavani leave.
