Fred produced a delicate, genius flick to assist Cristiano Ronaldo’s incredible long-range screamer for Manchester United against Tottenham Hotspur in their crucial Premier League clash.

It came in the 12th minute when Fred received the ball from Raphael Varane who had stepped up from defence.

Fred dropped into some space vacated by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who went to press Varane.

The Frenchman was quickly able to find Fred who, with his first touch, flicked the ball into the path of Ronaldo.

From there the Portuguese star did the rest, firing a stunning effort from range into the top corner and past Spurs’ goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The brilliance of Ronaldo’s finish no doubt overshadowed Fred’s flick-assist, which was a genius moment from the Brazilian.

The pass completely bypassed the Spurs press, and allowed Ronaldo the space and time he needed to pick out the top corner and give United the lead.

Harry Kane then leveled from the penalty spot in the 35th minute for Spurs, after Alex Telles was judged to have handled the ball in his own box.

However the match didn’t remain level for long, Ronaldo converting a tap-in three minutes later to restore United’s lead.

That was his 806th career goal, which officially made him the FIFA recognised highest ever goalscorer of all time and saw him surpass Josef Bican who previously held the record with 805 goals.

Ronaldo’s two goals were a marked turn in form from his prior performances, which had prompted speculation about his future.

“I don’t know, I haven’t asked him if he’s happy at Manchester and at this club,” Rangnick said when asked about Ronaldo’s mood before the match.

“For me, it’s important that he’s fit again and that he resumed training yesterday.

“We will see with which formation and with which line-up we are going to play.”
