Watch: Liverpool’s Joel Matip goes ‘full Matip’ in hilarious celebration

Joel Matip didn’t make it onto the pitch during Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday but he still managed to steal the show with his hilarious celebration of Fabio Carvalho’s late winner.

Liverpool have made a stuttering start to the Premier League season and looked set to drop more points as the match with Newcastle drew to a conclusion.

Alexander Isak put the visitors ahead on his debut before Roberto Firmino equalised during the second half – but Liverpool were growing ever more frustrated by Newcastle’s dogged defending.

But salvation arrived in the 98th minute. Newcastle failed to clear a corner and Carvalho lashed home the winner to send Anfield into ecstasy.

As the Newcastle defence slumped to its knees, the camera panned towards the Anfield touchline where various members of Liverpool’s coaching staff were bouncing around joyously.

And Matip was on his knees and banging the ground with delight as Liverpool secured their second win in a week.

It was the kind of behaviour Liverpool fans have come to expect from Matip and it’s understandable why the Cameroonian centre-back is considered such a cult hero at Anfield.

After the game, Jurgen Klopp admitted that Liverpool’s late winner was the ‘perfect response’ for Newcastle’s time-wasting.

“I think that we scored up in 90 plus eight [minutes] is the perfect response to that, to be honest. And I’m really happy about that,” Klopp said.

“It feels like this is the best way to win a football game – to be honest, I don’t need it every week, but if you can do it once or twice it’s really good.”

Matip hasn’t featured since suffering a groin injury in Liverpool’s draw at Fulham on the Premier League’s opening weekend but is likely to return for Saturday’s derby against Everton.
