Watch: Lionel Messi scores filthy lob for Argentina in World Cup warm-up
Argentina played their penultimate match before the Qatar 2022 World Cup on Friday night, beating Honduras 3-0 in Miami – and Lionel Messi showed he’s in red-hot form with a ridiculous lobbed goal for the Albiceleste’s third.
The game itself was comfortable for the Argentinian Seleccion.
Lautaro Martinez scored after just a quarter of an hour and Messi doubled their lead from the penalty spot just before the break.
A few minutes prior to that penalty, Honduras player Deiby Flores had tried to take Mesi out of the game, brutally shoulder-charging Argentina’s little genius.
Messi’s team-mate quickly rushed to his defence in a show of how important their captain and leader is to them, and that support clearly buoyed the PSG man.
Not only did he tuck away the penalty to make it two just before half-time, but he also scored an absolute worldie in the second period.
With 68 minutes gone, a Honduras midfielder was put under pressure and played a poor pass in the direction of one of his defenders.
Messi, ever alert, pounced on the opportunity and, seeing the goalkeeper well off his line, lobbed it up and over him with his first touch sending the ball beautifully into the back of the net.
The crowd at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami went wild – and for good reason: they’d just seen the GOAT proving why we call him the GOAT.
Messi has been on fire so far this season and with him in this sort of form, Argentina will be a force to be reckoned with at Qatar 2022.
After the game, Messi was asked what his message for the Argentinian people was.
He replied: “We are the same as them, as the people, with the same nervousness, desire and hope, but with tranquillity, because we have a great team, the World Cup is special and we have to take it step by step.”
