Watch: Lionel Messi scores Panenka penalty for 700th career goal

Barcelona were held to a 2-2 draw by Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night that could prove crucial in the La Liga title race – but Lionel Messi did at least bring up another career landmark.

Barca are now a point behind Real Madrid at the top of the table having played a game more, with Zinedine Zidane’s side at home to Real Betis on Thursday night.

Barca twice led against Atletico, first through a Diego Costa own goal and then a Messi penalty, but Atletico twice pegged them back through spot-kicks of their own, both converted by Saul Niguez.

On an otherwise disappointing night for the Catalans, though, Messi became only the seventh player in history to score 700 career goals.

And though his penalty came with the score at 1-1, against arguably the world’s best goalkeeper in Jan Oblak, and with Barca needing to win to move to the top of the table, Messi took it as though he was having a kickabout in the park.
