Watch: Man Utd’s Bruno Fernandes strikes the bar with goal gaping
Bruno Fernandes was controversially left out of Ralf Rangnick’s starting XI in Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday evening, but he was introduced off the bench and came closest to scoring.
The Portuguese playmaker watched from the stands as United produced another poor performance, allowing the visitors 15 shots before the break – the most any away side has managed in a Premier League game at Old Trafford since 2003-04.
Mason Greenwood was taken off for Fernandes at the hour mark, which resulted in the best spell of the match for Rangnick’s men.
United’s No.18 looked lively for a short period, but he missed a glorious opportunity to score. Ghosting in unmarked six minutes after his introduction, Fernandes got himself on the end of a Nemanja Matic cutback but rushed his finish and struck the bar.
Less than a minute later he floated the ball into the box for Cristiano Ronaldo to head home, but his Portugal team-mate was instantly flagged offside.
Wolves eventually made Fernandes pay for the costly miss when Joao Moutinho scored their match-winner in the 82nd minute.
Fernandes had a chance to equalise in the final seconds when he stepped up – ahead of Ronaldo – to hit a free-kick from a dangerous position on the edge of the box, but he was denied by a strong save by yet another Portuguese player, Jose Sa.
OFF THE BAR!
Bruno Fernandes hits the woodwork and moments after he finds Cristiano Ronaldo with a free kick who puts the ball in the back of the net but it's offside!
Still 0-0 at Old Trafford.
