Watch: Mason Mount scores brilliant winner for Chelsea in pre-season

Chelsea got their pre-season off to a winning start after Mason Mount’s stunning goal gave them a 2-1 victory over Mexican side Club America.

The Blues took the lead in the 55th minute when Timo Werner converted the rebound after his initial effort was blocked by team-mate Michy Batshuayi.

But Club America got a fortunate equaliser when an innocuous-looking backpass from Reece James somehow found its way past Marcus Bettinelli and into his own net.

The game looked set to be heading for a draw until Mount worked some space for himself on the edge of the box and then curled a beautiful strike into the far corner in the 83rd minute.

‘It was a very difficult match against very difficult opponents in an environment like playing in a full stadium,” Thomas Tuchel told Chelsea’s official media after the game.

“The first half was tough for us to create clear chances, we couldn’t score but kept a clean sheet and the second half we found better solutions and looked more dangerous. So a very good second half, a good first half. We deserved to win and I’m happy that we took that.”

Tuchel’s side will face Charlotte FC, Arsenal and Udinese in their next three pre-season friendlies as they continue to build up their fitness levels.

Chelsea then begin their 2022-23 season with an away game against Everton and Mount is already targeting Premier League glory.

“I set goals and targets last season and I managed to achieve them,” Mount said recently. “I feel like last season was a good one for me. I still feel that performance-wise it could have been better.

“The Premier League is a massive goal of mine and for this season. That’s what you’re looking at as a group. You never know what can happen and that’s something we want to focus on.

“As a group, we are winners. You can see it over the last couple of years. We’ve always managed to get ourselves a winning opportunity and hopefully, that continues.”
