Watch: Messi and Ramos square off during El Clasico

Few players have come up against one another as often as Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos. Yet after all these years there’s evidently no love lost.

Nobody has beaten Real Madrid in recent years more than Barcelona, and nobody has scored more against a Ramos-marshalled defence than Messi.

Barcelona won this one but Messi didn’t score, as a 1-0 victory at the Bernabeu took Barcelona 12 points clear of Madrid. Four days ago they’d won 3-0 there to beat their eternal rivals to the Copa Del Rey.

This didn’t quite match the explosive fireworks of the Jose Mourinho-Pep Guardiola era, but tensions simmered as Messi and Ramos squared off shortly before half-time, after the Madrid defender left an elbow on the Argentinian.
