Watch: The Sergio Reguilon moment that will be Jose Mourinho’s wet dream

New signing Sergio Reguilon had a Tottenham debut to remember as the left-back was heavily involved in their penalty shootout League Cup victory over Chelsea

The £25million signing from Real Madrid, who caught the eye on loan during Sevilla’s Europa League-winning campaign last term, didn’t get off to the best of starts against Frank Lampard’s side.

Having dallied with the ball in midfield, he lost possession and allowed Chelsea to go on the attack. Eager to atone, he went chasing back but was done by a simple turn from Cesar Azpilicueta, who then had the time to pick out a pass for Timo Werner’s early opener.

While he was sold a little too easily by Azpilicueta, the eagerness to get back was something Mourinho is going to love – and he didn’t stop doing it all game.

Take the following example, in which Callum Hudson-Odoi is dribbling upfield in a promising counter-attack for Chelsea, while Reguilon comes charging back from out on the wing to rob the ball back just beyond the centre circle with a perfectly-executed tackle.

It might have been in an empty stadium, but it’s the kind of contribution that would usually draw roars of approval from what would have been 62,000 delighted supporters. If this a sign of things to come, Mourinho is going to bloody love him.
