Thiago Silva is impervious to the effects of time and he proved it once again with a sensational goal-line clearance in Chelsea’s Champions League game against Juventus on Tuesday night.

The 37-year-old Brazilian defender moved to Chelsea from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020 and, given his age, some worried he might be past it.

He has spent the last 18 months proving nothing could be further from the truth, putting in outstanding performances as Chelsea won last season’s Champions League and continuing that form in 2021-22.

Before the Blues played Juventus at Stamford Bridge, the Brazilian’s young team-mate Trevoh Chalobah said: “Thiago Silva was one of my idols growing up as a kid, and with how successful he’s been. It’s great sharing the pitch and training sessions with him.

“For me as a young player, he is someone I need to look at for where I want to be, and where I want to go to.”

Chalobah is certainly looking in the right direction, as Silva showed once more on Tuesday night.

With 27 minutes gone and Chelsea one to the good, former Chelsea man Alvaro Morata was put through on goal and managed to lob the ball over Edouard Mendy.

He must have thought he’d scored. But then Silva steamed in and brilliantly hooked the ball off the line.
